Christmas Homes for the Holidays in AZ

Two families gleefully arrived to their new Habitat for Humanity homes on December 18 expecting to get the keys for the homes they had worked so hard to purchase. Both are moving out of crowded living situations with family and were expecting to sleep on the floor until they could save enough money to purchase beds. Both families were joyfully overwhelmed to find their new homes fully furnished thanks to Aaron’s, U-Haul, and Brooklyn Bedding. Aaron’s generously donated all of the furniture, computer, and washer & dryer. U-Haul provided in-kind and volunteer support while Brooklyn Bedding provided mattress sets for all eight beds. Zone to Go Cart Brings Activities to Kids at Phoenix Children’s Hospital

Phoenix Children’s Hospital (PCH) has a great state-of-the-art play area that provides an escape for patients and their families from daily life in the hospital. After discussing the need with PCH, First Things First provided funding for a Zone to Go cart that brings many of the favorite activities of the Zone right to the patients’ rooms including games on a large touch screen computer, arts & crafts, science experiments, and more. Best of all, the patients receive one-on-one attention to build relationships with hospital staff or volunteers. In May, Kurt and Brenda visited the hospital to dedicate the cart and experience all of its features firsthand as they enjoyed play time with several patients.

As Spring Break Mission: Possible! Scholarship recipients begin submitting follow-up reports, new groups of students have been awarded with scholarships for their summer service-based mission trips in the US. A total of 47 groups from across the country were awarded with scholarships totaling $39,000 to serve the needs of various communities this summer with projects such as home repairs, community garden planting, caring for those with disabilities and the elderly, serving in food banks, and more. As one advisor wrote, “It is so important to teach the youth about Christ and His teachings and the way in which He lived His life for us. This teaching is vital, but to just teach is like just having a vertical cross that is missing the horizontal part. The youth need to experience being Christ’s hands and feet. They need to experience giving to others without being paid back in return. They need opportunities to live out Matthew 25. To me service is the horizontal piece of the cross and a necessary piece.” Please join us in prayer for these groups as they share the love of Christ through service this summer.

Kurt and Brenda in Cali for CHEER

Kurt and Brenda made a special visit to a high school in Southern California to encourage the students to make a positive impact on someone else. The Warners spoke to the 4,000 students at Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Eastvale during two assemblies as part of CHEER – Conscious Helps Encourage Equal Respect. Roosevelt earned the appearance by the Warners with their enthusiastic implementation of the CHEER program during the pilot phase of the national expansion and partnership with Best Buddies. Since Fall 2014, Roosevelt has hosted three CHEER weeks with more than 300 students adopting a disability for a day and coming together at the week’s end to discuss the impact. The message of inclusion is taking hold at Roosevelt where the student body recently elected a student with downs syndrome as Homecoming Queen. During the assembly, Kurt reminded the audience that his trophies, rings and awards will soon be forgotten but the “impact you have on someone else is never forgotten.” Any schools interested in hosting a CHEER week at their school can inquire by calling the First Things First office at 602-385-0840.

A Reason to Give Thanks

The Amda and Roberts Family were given a big reason to give thanks this holiday season as they not only moved into their new Habitat homes in Phoenix and Coolidge, respectively, but were surprised to find them completely furnished thanks to a Homes for the Holidays team effort spearheaded by First Things First. Nominated by Habitat for Humanity of Central AZ, the two families with 10 children between them were overwhelmed by the furniture, TV, washer/dryer and computer donated by Aarons, the mattresses gifted by R&S Mattress, furnishings shopped for by U-Haul volunteers, and the pantry filled with food, including a turkey and all the fixings, provided by Albertsons. Including these families, First Things First has blessed a total of 35 families since inception with Homes for the Holidays! Special thanks to the partners listed above and to the Pedal Power Foundation for their continued support and involvement.

First Things First thanks Habitat for Humanity of Central Arizona, as well as long-time partner Aaron’s for ten years of support valued at more than $270,000! In addition, a special kudos to friends from U-Haul, R&S Mattresses, Albertson’s and the Pedal Power Foundation for helping make dreams come true for Vanessa and Marina and their kids!
